In the heart of the marshland lies a small community of humans. They are a simple folk who live removed from the large cities and their influences. They are, for the most part, self-sufficient, occasionally trading goods with the surrounding villages.
Roughly 20 years ago, Cayman and Lexia Weathermont came across something peculiar while gathering wood. They found an infant halfling in a basket floating in a pond. He was wrapped in a blanket with only a small, wooden necklace on his person. Having no idea where he came from, and no trace of any other beings around, they took him in, raised him, and gave him a name, Mads.
Over the years he did his part in the community, often helping with chores which favored his small stature. He grew into a kind, loving young man. However, it was apparent to the other humans that he did not belong amongst them and their way of life. He developed a strong case of wanderlust, which would often hinder him from completing his duties in the community. He also had the ability to harness the magic forces of his surroundings, something that the humans knew of only through the tales their parents, and their parents before them had told in passing.
After several very close calls, and some minor injuries to a few unexpecting individuals, the town decided that Mads needed to leave. Because of his loving, albeit naive, nature, they couldn’t break the news of why they had decided this. Instead, they convinced him that it was time he took his pilgrimage to become an adult, a tradition he didn’t recall ever hearing of, but one that his personality couldn’t resist. Along with his necklace, handmade walking staff, and a few supplies, he ventured off, ready to become a man and explore the world.
